Library News

2016 was an exciting year for the Imperial Public Library. January through May, many children participated in craft projects and/or homework assistance. Adults also were assisted with the use of computers and English language programs. One of the major events hosted by the library each year is the Summer Reading Program to encourage reading during summer break so children maintain and improve their reading skills. June and July were spent holding the Summer Reading Program. We had a total of 289 in attendance for the 2016 program. The Summer Reading Program consists of twenty minutes of reading, a puppet play, readers’ theater, arts and crafts, and a snack one day a week each week of the six week program. When school began in the fall, we continued our monthly craft program, as well as assisting children and adults with homework, computers and English language assistance. In October, we worked hard sponsoring a Homecoming Parade for the community of Imperial during Buena Vista’s homecoming on October 7, 2016. We had 22 entries including floats, bikes, fire trucks, cars, pickups, horses, and a shopping cart. Prizes were donated for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. We also provided snacks and drinks after the game at a reception for past graduates of BVHS. A great time was had by all! November continued our crafts and homework assistance for children as well as assisting adults with computers and language programs. We also began encouraging patrons to sign up for the Pronunciator Program on Texshare as well as the many other educational programs available through this database. Through the month of December, we used books to decorate for Christmas in true library style! All in all, 2016 was a wonderful and busy year for the Imperial Public Library.
